Blagojevich pitched his plan to about 8,000 congregants at the New Salem Baptist House of Hope on the Far South Side and urged them to contact lawmakers to register their support. Revved up by Rev. James Meeks, Salem's pastor and a state senator often allied with the governor, the congregation of the vast church responded with rousing applause to Blagojevich's appeal.
"How many of you agree with me that it is the right thing to do to give your grandmother a free ride on a bus?" the governor asked the congregation. "Are you with me or am I by myself?"
