A sermon that started with even-toned thank-yous and pleasantries ended boisterously, with exalting shouts, applause and organ blasts.
In between, Rev. Al Sharpton stirred a crescendo of excitement Sunday morning among hundreds of congregants at a West Side church. He exhorted them to take up the cause against injustice in their community and railed against Chicago police and the alleged abuses of what he called a "Gestapo unit," the department's recently disbanded Special Operations Section.
"A criminal is a criminal whether he has on bluejeans or a blue uniform," Sharpton said from the pulpit at Greater St. John Bible Church. "You can't tell young people to respect the law and then watch the law-keepers break the law."
