Can Blockbuster be KO'd by Netflix?

The San Jose Mercury reports:
Netflix founder Reed Hastings gives the impression of a happy warrior.

When he sat down with the Mercury News this week, the 46-year-old chief executive talked about the "excitement" of battling Blockbuster in the online DVD rental business and the "amazing" future for Web-based video that, far down the road, could supplant the 1 1/2 million discs Netflix ships each day.

Los Gatos-based Netflix suffered its first loss in total subscribers from the first to the second quarter this year - losing 55,000 and declining to 6.74 million overall - but reported large gains in net income and revenue. Hastings points to Netflix's Watch Now service, which streams movies on demand for viewing on PCs, as a sign of his company's technological evolution.
We'll bet mailing DVD's around isn't the future.
