Chicago area ministers are preparing to head to Springfield with a message for state lawmakers: end the budget stalemate. They say the delay in reaching a budget is costing taxpayers $40,000 each day representatives fail to agree on a deal. The ministers haven't heard about "though shall not steal",even by majority vote.
The state legislature is deadlocked over its budget. Last month, Illinois lawmakers passed an interim budget which expires this week. Now, some Chicago area ministers are preparing to take their demands to Springfield, where the plan to engage in civil disobedience and risk getting arrested to make their point.
Interestingly, many of the same ministers going to Springfield opened up their churches to Governor Blagojevich and other Democrats at election time. Now, the pastors say they are considering advising their tens of thousands of members to stop supporting any Democrat who does not support an immediate and significant increase in education spending.
The dozen Chicago pastors gathered together Sunday will be joined by dozens more Monday. One hundred in all plan on, in their words, 'storming the state Capitol' on Monday to demand more money for schools.
