For the first time in decades, more people age 75 and older are moving from the South to the Midwest than the other way around, according to U.S. Census Bureau data.No word yet on when those under 75 are moving back to the Midwest from the South.
Between 2000 and 2005, about 58,000 people in this group left the South for the Midwest, compared with about 17,000 people who made the more traditional move, said William Frey, a demographer for the Brookings Institution. In the previous five years, 59,000 Midwest residents of this age had moved South, with 44,000 going the other way.
