Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama has been critical of giant retailer Wal-Mart Stores Inc., and on Tuesday his wife resigned from the board of one its food suppliers citing the increased time demands of his campaign. No word yet on when the Obamas plan to send their children to public schools.Oh,we forgot that's a different subject for those strong believers in public education.
Michelle Obama's position on the board of Westchester, Ill.-based TreeHouse Foods Inc., has raised questions for the campaign because her husband has praised a union-led effort to change working conditions at Wal-Mart.
The company said in a Securities and Exchange Commission filing Tuesday that her resignation from the board spot she has held since 2005 ''is not due to any disagreement with the Company on any matter.'' Last year she earned $51,200 in director fees from the company, according to the couple's 2006 tax returns.
''As my campaign commitments continue to ramp up, it is becoming more difficult for me to provide the type of focus I would like on my professional responsibilities,'' Michelle Obama said in a written statement.
