US House backs bill barring genetic discrimination

Reuters reports:
A bill that would prohibit genetic discrimination against people, for instance not hiring or insuring someone predisposed to a given illness, won overwhelming approval in the U.S. House of Representatives on Wednesday.

The measure, approved by a vote of 420 to 3, now goes to the Senate. The White House said it supports the bill, which is opposed by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, a leading business lobby.

The bill was first introduced in Congress 12 years ago. It was approved twice in the Senate by unanimous votes, the last time in 2005, but had never previously cleared the House.
