Michigan college tuition up 37% in 4 years

The Detroit News reports:
Michigan's 15 public universities increased tuition and fees more than those in any other state last year, the latest in a trend of hikes that threatens to close college doors to low- and middle-income families.

That's the conclusion of a 108-page study by Michigan Auditor General Thomas McTavish released Wednesday -- the same day presidents of the three largest universities testified before lawmakers on their colleges' economic importance and the need for more funding.

The study said Michigan's public universities have increased tuition and fees 37 percent over four years and now are the nation's fifth most costly. The average $740 increase in those costs just last year led the country. New York increased costs by $60 last year.
