Former Michigan congressman David Bonior will lead Democrat John Edwards' presidential campaign, according to media reports Tuesday, a move that would help cement Edwards' status as the favored candidate for organized labor and put Bonior back in the center of Democratic Party politics.David Bonier feels at home at a Democratic Socialists for America meeting.
The Associated Press and the online Hotline newsletter, both citing anonymous sources, said Bonior will become a senior adviser to Edwards' One America Committee, a political action committee that forms the kernel of Edwards' as-yet undeclared campaign effort. The reports said Bonior would be campaign manager if, as is widely believed, Edwards declares himself a presidential candidate for 2008.
Edwards, a former senator from North Carolina, unsuccessfully ran for the 2004 Democratic nomination and was named John Kerry's running mate. Since the election, he has traveled widely, written a book and been one of the Democratic Party's most vocal advocates for aid to the working poor. Bonior, who represented a congressional district centered in Macomb County for 26 years, is one of the party's closest allies of organized labor.
