Mayor Daley Strongly Backs Hastert

The Chicago Sun-Times reports:
Mayor Daley defended U.S. House Speaker Dennis Hastert today amid mounting pressure for the Illinois Republican powerhouse to resign as speaker for failing to investigate Mark Foley’s lurid e-mails to an underage page.

The Washington Times, a conservative newspaper, has demanded Hastert’s resignation. Daley considers the demand over the top.

“If you took the impropriety of every congressman and senator in Washington D.C. [as an excuse to demand resignations], I don’t think anybody would be left,” Daley said.

“I’ve known Denny Hastert personally and publicly for a long time. He’s been a great public servant, a great speaker of the House. He really has. He’s been very fair to the city of Chicago, which he didn’t have to. This idea of asking everyone to resign — there would be no one left in Congress. They’d better be careful,” Daley said.
How about that for the suck up to the Republican Party? Here is one indication that a big time Democrat thinks the Republicans are going to win the House in November. How many Republicans really think Hastert is a "great speaker"? Not many.
