Chicago drug kingpins could be left without a roof over their heads -- literally -- under a mayoral crackdown unveiled Tuesday that could turn neighborhood eyesores into affordable housing. No word yet from William Hanhardt in jail,on this one.
The Chicago Police Department already seizes cars, jewelry, cash and other assets from convicted drug dealers. Drug forfeiture money pays for surveillance cameras installed on high-crime street corners.
Now, City Hall is working hand-in-glove with the Cook County state's attorney's office to get its hands on the buildings drug dealers use to ply their trade.
Forfeiture of properties will be pursued if any one of three conditions are met: More than 1 kilogram of narcotics is recovered there; a police investigation determines that gang members are using the building to sell or store drugs or to store or launder drug proceeds; or the building was purchased with drug proceeds in violation of the Money Laundering Statute.
