Seniors told to return Medicare refunds

The Seattle Times reports:
About 6,500 Washington residents will be receiving letters from the federal government instructing them how to pay back money they mistakenly received as refunds for their Medicare drug-plan premiums.

The seniors are among about 230,000 Medicare recipients nationwide who two weeks ago erroneously received a total of about $50 million in refunds averaging $215 per person because of a processing glitch. All of the affected people have premiums for their Medicare Part D drug plans or Medicare Advantage plans deducted automatically from their Social Security payments.

Most of the refunds were given through direct deposits, though some people were sent checks.
Great moments in socialized medicine.
