Ford may cut 6,000 white-collar jobs, report says

The Detriot Free Press reports:
Ford Motor Co., which is attempting to revive its North American business, plans to eliminate 6,000 more white-collar jobs — 16% of that workforce — in next month, Bloomberg reported. The report cited an unnamed person familiar with the plan.

The cuts would be achieved through buyouts, Bloomberg said. But if it doesn’t achieve that goal, Ford would resort to firing people.

Under the company’s Way Forward turnaround plan, first announced in January, Ford said it would cut more than 30,000 jobs and idle 14 plants in an effort to restore its North American operations to profitability by 2008.
