When Joseph Mattes worked for the Chicago city clerk, he'd leave his car running outside City Hall as he went to sign in to work.Who says there's "accountability" in democracry? Nothing like a one party rule for decades to aid in the extortion of taxpayers.Robbing a bank wouldn't be as fun.No wonder Chicago has such high taxes, corruption is expensive.
After making sure he got paid for the day, Mattes left and drove off to his real job, his law office, authorities said.
For 12 years, under City Clerk Walter S. Kozubowski, Mattes was a ghost payroller, authorities say.
But the pension he gets every month for his time there is very real, the Chicago Sun-Times has learned.
Mattes receives a pension of $2,678.67 a month, or more than $32,000 a year, for his years with the city. That includes the time he was at the city clerk's office -- doing nothing, authorities say.
What's more, the pension board says there's nothing it can do about it.
