AFL-CIO President Pressures Mayor Daley

Michael Sneed reports:
Sneed hears Mayor Daley and AFL-CIO President John Sweeney had a hush-hush meeting in a private suite at the Drake Hotel on Tuesday, during which Sweeney presented Hizzoner with a letter urging him not to veto the controversial big box ordinance. The letter was reportedly signed by the heads of all national AFL-CIO affiliates.

•The Backshot: The ordinance requires all stores bigger than 90,000 square feet operated by companies with $1 billion or more in sales to pay employees a "living wage" of at least $10 an hour and $3 in benefits by 2010. It passed the City Council 35-14, despite vocal objections of Daley and local business leaders.

•The Buckshot: Sneed hears rumbles Daley got peeved with Chicago Federation of Labor leader Dennis Gannon during the meeting.

•The Killshot? Daley, who is contemplating using his first-ever veto on the ordinance, said he'd get back to Sweeney.
John Sweeney is a member of The Democratic Socialists of America.
