Michigan boasts the highest percentage of out-of-state moves in the nation, according to data collected this year by the largest mover in the state, United Van Lines.It seems people are moving from the union dominated Michigan to places like Texas and Florida.Too bad Michigan has a state income tax.
Between Jan. 1 and June 30, the company handled 4,482 moves. Of those, 65 percent -- or 2,912 -- were moves out of the state. This puts Michigan in a place it hasn't been with United since 1982.
Since van lines are expensive, corporations tend to use them, so the lower percentage of inbound moves suggests the job market may be to blame, said William Frey, a University of Michigan researcher.
However, people who are retiring also use van lines, Frey said. The top three states where United moved people from Michigan this year: Florida, Texas and Arizona.
