Michigan now tops the country in the number of people moving out

From 1990 to 2005, the state shed 158,000 manufacturing jobs, according to Lou Glazer, president of Michigan Future, Inc., an economic think tank based in Ann Arbor. Meanwhile, Michigan-based Delphi Corp., General Motors Corp. and Ford Motor Co., have announced plans to cut 73,000 jobs nationally in the next few years.

The state's housing market has cooled and foreclosure rates are rising. College graduates are increasingly taking their degrees to more cosmopolitan cities that have more jobs. Michigan now tops the country in the number of people moving out, according to a new study by United Van Lines.
