Calgary hits population milestone

The Calgary Herald reports:
Welcome to Calgary -- population one million. Our city officially hits that symbolic milestone today, with Mayor Dave Bronconnier declaring the first baby born after midnight early this morning to be Calgary's millionth resident.

"Today we celebrate a community that's really on fire," the mayor said. "Alberta's second century really belongs to Calgary."

The latest city census, released

Monday, pegs the population at 991,759 as of April. With Calgary growing by 98 people a day -- 71

moving here from somewhere else in addition to births -- Bronconnier said by now the city has hit one million.

The millionth Calgarian will be thrown a birthday party and feted by the mayor today.

"It's an important milestone in our history," Bronconnier said Monday, remarking on the city's "stellar economic growth and quality of life. What's happening in Calgary is nothing short of phenomenal."

Calgary becomes the third city in Canada to reach a million people, after Toronto and Montreal. The city of Vancouver proper has about 600,000 people.
