The Incredible Shrinking city of Boston

The Boston Herald has an editorial on Boston:
It’s official - as official as the U.S. Census Bureau can make it. Boston is among the nation’s fastest shrinking cities. In figures released Tuesday, Boston ranked sixth among cities that had lost population between 2004 and 2005 - about 8,600 residents or 1.5 percent. In fact, when it comes to this sorry statistic, Boston’s lost population ranked higher than Detroit, New Orleans (pre-Katrina, of course) and Cleveland.
Mayor Tom Menino remains in denial, demanding a recount - or something - all the while bemoaning his inability to put more city taxes on more stuff (like meals and parking) because that would be so helpful to the situation dontcha know.
Of course, five-year figures (2000-2005) put Boston just ahead of San Francisco in the loss column - not shabby company in terms of desirable places to live. That may be the silver lining. It’s not that Boston is a bad place to live; it’s that it can be a great place to live. And until the law of supply and demand is repealed that will continue to make it a rather expensive place to live - for those who can still afford its charms.
The Ted Kennedy way is the road to decline.Boston maybe a one party Democratic town, but people sure are voting with their feet.
