City schools 'incredibly horrible places'

The Globe and Mail reports:
Despite the millions of dollars the Ontario government has shelled out to fix crumbling schools, many of Toronto's high-school students are being taught in buildings ridden with asbestos and mould that pose a serious health risk, a report being released today by a parent group says.

In its annual review based on health and safety records from 405 of the Toronto District School Board's 553 schools, the Toronto Parent Network found the environment in high schools is much worse than in elementary schools. Two high schools -- Central Technical School and Northview Heights Secondary School -- were plagued with the highest number of problems, including asbestos, mould, vermin and loose ceiling tiles.

Other schools, such as Danforth Collegiate and Technical Institute and Parkdale Collegiate Institute, are also exposing students to various health risks as a result of inadequate upkeep and underfunding, the report found.
Great moments in public education. Thanks to Darren Miller of Right on the Left Coast for heads up on this one.
