Black politicians on Friday began lining up behind Ald. Todd Stroger (8th) as a replacement for his ailing father, Cook County Board President John Stroger. No wonder Cook County lost more population than any other county from 2000-2004.Not everyone can be related to the tax collectors.
If it's OK for white politicians to take care of or be succeeded by their children, the same standard should apply to African Americans, they said.
"It always appears that there's two Americas: one for white America, one for black America. But we should be one city, one county government," said Ald. Arenda Troutman (20th).
"Just like [Bill] Lipinski -- his son replaced him. [Mike ] Madigan -- his daughter was anointed. [Tom] Hynes, his son is there now. If President Stroger says that Todd is his choice, then the people should stand behind him. Not to stand behind him would be a double-standard."
