A fascinating and important subset of America's cultural wars is the battle for the allegiance of people who describe themselves as Christians but seldomdarken the doors of any church. This is a significant article. The old mainline Protestant churches have destroyed themselves with the anti-family ideology they promote. The growth in evangelical churches means the numbers are going against those who don't like conservatives.
Pacific Northwest church affiliation is so low that scholars of religion have dubbed the region, "The None Zone," meaning that on questionnaires the largest religious affiliation is "none." We are less churched than any part of the nation.
Two recent articles in this newspaper brought this to mind. "U District congregations might move in together" (May 10), and "[Redmond] Church seeking OK to expand" (May 13), illustrated rather dramatically who is winning the race to enroll the unchurched.
There is so little interest in mainstream Protestant churches in neighborhoods surrounding the University of Washington that several major denominations are considering housing their declining flocks in a single structure. Consolidation of building use — if not actual congregations — remains to be determined. What is determined, however, is the growth of evangelical, nondenominational churches such as Washington Ca-thedral in Redmond.
