A landmark study last December found that acetaminophen poisoning is the most common cause of acute liver failure. Northwestern’s Dr. Steven Flamm, one of the researchers, says half of all cases are accidental because people take more than one medicine.You might want to read this one.
"They often really think the over-the-counter medicine aren't real medicines," Flamm said.
An extra strength tablet contains 500 milligrams of acetaminophen. Adults can safely take eight tablets in 24 hours.
But if you add a flu medicine, or a cough medicine, or like Cherise, a prescription drug that contains acetaminophen, you could be in big trouble.
"They are following the label on all the different pills, but they don't realize that acetaminophen is in all of them. And they're getting an accidental overdose," Flamm said
