Corrections officers who work in the commonwealth’s prisons are allotted 15 sick days a year. One guess as to the average number they actually use.If you work in the private sector I'll bet you don't get that many sick days.Government workers really have good benefits don't they?
If you guessed 15 - you win! But as usual, the taxpayers lose.
Herald reporter Maggie Mulvihill yesterday revealed that the state’s 3,510 prison guards called in sick 52,399 times in 2005, averaging 15 sick days each. Taxpayers forked over $8.6 million to the sick officers for paid leave, and $3.7 million in overtime to cover their replacements.
Jaw-dropping numbers, to be sure. Even more stunning is the fact that the numbers have actually dropped under Kathleen Dennehy, the commissioner the guards’ union loves to hate. In 2004, officers used an average of 17.3 sick days each.
