Saying Democrats have used millions of dollars in the state budget as a slush fund for pet projects, a Cranford man, working with a lawyer for the Republican Party, filed a lawsuit today to put the brakes on $25 million in pending grants. What's a constitution among friends in New Jersey? Here's a rather good example of big government unrestrained by anything. It appears the state Legislature of New Jersey is a criminal gang.
David Robinson, an attorney and registered Republican, said the Democrat-controlled Legislature broke state law by essentially controlling a $128 million grant program in the Department of the Treasury.
"My tax dollars and your tax dollars are going to support projects within a municipality that obtained those funds simply because somebody was politically connected, that's the problem," Robinson said.
Robinson said most of the grant money has been awarded, but he wants a court to block the state from giving out what's left. He said lawmakers controlled grants that were supposed to be given out by Treasury, violating rules on the separation of powers between the executive and legislative branches of government.
Gov. Jon Corzine's administration did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
According to the lawsuit, some grants were awarded before applications were even received. Some of the grants went to schools or nonprofits that provide social services, while others were simply earmarked for unnamed "municipal projects."
