Looking at pictures of moderately heavy models lowered women's self-esteem as much as looking at pictures of extremely thin models, according to a new study published in the Journal of Consumer Research. In some parts of the country not having fast food joints around would make them depressed.
In contrast, women's self-esteem tended to rise when they looked at moderately thin or extremely heavy models.
"We demonstrated that exposure to thin models does not necessarily have a negative impact on one's self-esteem," said Dirk Smeesters and Naomi Mandel, two of the study's authors.
