Thousands of low-income Vermonters will get discounted fuel oil from Venezuela this winter under a deal arranged by Rep. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt.No word yet on whether Comrade Sanders has any feelings about those who had property was stolen by Comrade Chavez.
About 2.4 million gallons of oil will be available at a 40 percent discount to low-income Vermonters who receive state and federal heating assistance. Another 108,000 gallons will be distributed for free to homeless shelters, Sanders' office said Friday.
The deal would be similar to agreements Venezuela and the government controlled Citgo oil company reached recently with Maine and Rhode Island. Parts of Massachusetts and New York City have also benefited from Venezuela's offer.
"No one in this country should ever have to make the choice between putting food on the table and paying their home heating bills," said Sanders, who is running for the U.S. Senate. "I am very pleased that we were able to reach this agreement and help ease the burden of skyrocketing fuel costs for Vermonters."
