Charged with corruption and caught on tape making incriminating statements, Chicago City Clerk James Laski today turned in his resignation. There's more to come on this story.
"It is with deep regret and a profound sense of humility that I hereby tender my resignation as city clerk of the city of Chicago, effective Feb. 7, 2006," Laski wrote in a one-sentence letter delivered to the office of Mayor Richard Daley.
By law, Daley now will select someone to fill the post until voters make their choice in next year's citywide elections. In a federal indictment handed up Jan. 26, Laski was charged with soliciting $50,000 in bribes for steering city trucking business to a lifelong friend. Also charged in the scheme were John Briatta, a brother-in-law of Cook County Commissioner John Daley and two other city employees.
