From offices in a downtown skyscraper looking out at the snowcapped Rockies, Newmont Mining Corp. is intensifying a global hunt for the next mother lode of gold.Environmentalists want high prices because it's an elitist movement.Of course it's not just gold because real estate also.
Spurred by rising prices, Newmont opened a gold mine in Nevada in December and plans to open two more - one in Nevada and another in Ghana - this year. A mine in Ghana is scheduled to open next year.
Other corporate prospectors are taking similar steps, dusting off back-burner projects and pouring more money into exploration around the world. Environmentalists decry their plans as a threat to pristine habitat, air and water.
