Rising gold prices spur push to reopen old mines, explore

The Balitmore Sun reports:
From offices in a downtown skyscraper looking out at the snowcapped Rockies, Newmont Mining Corp. is intensifying a global hunt for the next mother lode of gold.

Spurred by rising prices, Newmont opened a gold mine in Nevada in December and plans to open two more - one in Nevada and another in Ghana - this year. A mine in Ghana is scheduled to open next year.

Other corporate prospectors are taking similar steps, dusting off back-burner projects and pouring more money into exploration around the world. Environmentalists decry their plans as a threat to pristine habitat, air and water.
Environmentalists want high prices because it's an elitist movement.Of course it's not just gold because real estate also.
