U.S. Sen. Hillary Clinton -- recently described as a "formidable" potential presidential candidate by President Bush -- drew cheers and some vocal anti-war protests Saturday night during a stop in the Democratic bastion of San Francisco. The more the demonstrators show up at Hillary events, the mainstream she looks in the Democratic party. It appears Hillary's views on Iraq aren't that much different than the current administration.
"We cannot root for failure in Iraq," the New York senator said in an appearance before a largely enthusiastic crowd of 1,500 at a benefit for charities supported by the Bar Association of San Francisco.
Four protesters twice attempted to disrupt her appearance at Masonic Auditorium -- once at the start and again during a discussion on Iraq, when some dropped a banner from the balcony, chanting and urging Clinton to "stop supporting war."
The senator briefly acknowledged the protests but forged ahead, saying, "I don't agree with either the administration, which basically has taken a position that we'll be there as long as it takes ... or my friends, who say get out now.
