Detroit is bracing for a lean new year

The Detriot Free Press reports:
The City of Detroit's resolution for the new year can be summed up in four words: Get by with less.

That will be the mantra for Detroit officials, city residents and just about anyone else who has to rely on city services in 2006. With the budget still very much in flux, one thing is certain -- Detroit's ongoing money troubles will mean a penny-pinching 2006.

Bulk trash pickup -- a Detroit tradition for more than a decade -- ends Sunday.

Almost a third of the city's recreation centers are closing in January; more are likely to shut down later in 2006.
Detriot in some ways will be the leader on how many old industrial cities deal with decline.
