A holdup at a Near North Side bank has brought the region to the brink of an unwelcome record: 2005 likely will see the most bank robberies ever in the Chicago area, federal authorities said.
Monday's robbery of the Chase Bank branch in the 900 block of West Armitage pushed the yearly total to 193 in the five-county metro area, according to the FBI. The record number of bank holdups in a year is 195 in 1995.
