When the Oakland mayor's race starts in earnest next spring, the candidates will be asked about everything from the city's poor schools to downtown redevelopment, and maybe even about the city's storm drain plan for the hills.A true Democratic party happening. Why not the best should be an Oakland motto.
For the leading candidates, Council President Ignacio De La Fuente and former Rep. Ron Dellums, those are softball questions with ready answers. The harder questions will be about their family lives and specifically their attitudes toward their sons -- both of whom have had serious criminal charges leveled against them.
Dellums, the ultraliberal champion, took a hard line with his son -- eventually cutting him off entirely -- while preaching compassion for young black men caught up in the criminal justice system.
De La Fuente, on the other hand, has railed against prostitution and came down hard on a suspected pedophile priest in his district, but he has been far more compassionate toward his son, who stands accused of raping a 15-year-old girl and three other women. Earlier this week, De La Fuente stood by his namesake, Ignacio De La Fuente Jr., 32, in an Alameda County courtroom as the younger man was charged with two additional counts of rape, bringing to five the number of rape charges filed against him in the four cases.
