U.S. Rep. Bobby Rush (D-Ill.) hasn't paid his mortgage since July, according to a lawsuit filed Monday, and now a bank has filed to foreclose on his South Side home. How about that for a defense?
Mortgage Electronic Registration Systems filed suit on behalf of Bank One, through which Rush has had a $334,600 loan since 2001.
The Chicago congressman and his wife, Carolyn, live in the 3500 block of South Calumet Avenue, but the bank is asking a judge to boot the Rushes out of their home unless they pay up.
Carolyn Rush is director of banking development for Illinois Treasurer Judy Baar Topinka, and both Rushes run the Englewood Community Development Corp.
In a statement issued through a spokeswoman, Bobby Rush said "over the past three years, I have used considerable personal assets in building a church. I do not apologize. As with any worthwhile endeavor of this magnitude, personal sacrifices must be made."
