Tourists in short supply in Michigan

The Detriot News is reporting one industry that's slowing down:
One of the biggest travel weekends of the year is threatening to be a dud for Michigan hotels and bed-and-breakfasts. A slumping economy, record gas prices and the opening of many schools before Labor Day may combine to keep some would-be travelers off the road and away from their wallets.

Resort operators, who'd hoped to turn a big profit during the last fling of the summer, are offering discounts to try to offset weak reservations for the holiday weekend. So far, it hasn't worked.
Is this going to be just a Michigan problem or a national tourist industry slowdown?
