One of the biggest travel weekends of the year is threatening to be a dud for Michigan hotels and bed-and-breakfasts. A slumping economy, record gas prices and the opening of many schools before Labor Day may combine to keep some would-be travelers off the road and away from their wallets.Is this going to be just a Michigan problem or a national tourist industry slowdown?
Resort operators, who'd hoped to turn a big profit during the last fling of the summer, are offering discounts to try to offset weak reservations for the holiday weekend. So far, it hasn't worked.
