Poverty in the Philadephia Area

The Philadephia Inquirer has this story on poverty in the Philadephia area:
In Philadelphia, which has been losing jobs and residents for fifty years, 25 percent of its estimated 1.41 million residents lived below the federal poverty line last year, up from 22 percent a year earlier.

About 35 percent of Philadelphia children were living in poverty, up from 28 percent in 2003, the survey found.

Those figures pushed Philadelphia into the No. 9 spot among poorest U.S. big cities and No. 5 among U.S. counties, its worst showing in at least three years.
