Generation X turns 40

The Detriot News describes generation X:
Generation Xers also witnessed the crumbling of the family structure, as 40 percent were raised in broken homes.

This, too, made Xers more weary of the world around them, as they shuttled between their parents' homes every other weekend.

Dora Mattucci grew up in Shelby Township in a one-parent home. Her parents were never married, and during her formative years, her stepfather was serving in Vietnam.

She said growing up in that situation helped mold her into the person she is today. "Being self-reliant, being goal-oriented, being able to take care of myself should something happen, I think that's where that comes from," she said.
