Tuition shock

For Philadephia area college students:

Tuition and required fees at the region's big public universities - plus Penn State and Rutgers - cost an average of $8,200 last year, about 70 percent more than the $4,800 U.S. norm for four-year public schools.

Local community colleges run 20 percent above the national average, while four-year private schools are nearly 30 percent pricier.
