Mayor Daley has a
secret political organization:
Mayor Daley's patronage office has operated in the shadows, creating secret political groups in city agencies where workers were rewarded with jobs, raises and promotions, according to federal charges lodged against the mayor's patronage chief, Robert Sorich.
Many of those political groups certified precinct workers under the banner of an organization some members didn't even know had a name.
The Lakefront Independent Democratic Organization was the vehicle for political foot soldiers and top city brass to sign up as deputy registrars, meaning they had the authority to register voters.
Daley's numbers are quite impressive:
Nearly four out of every 10 people who register voters for the pro-Daley groups have city jobs, according to the Tribune's analysis.
That contrasts with Jesse Jackson Sr.'s Rainbow/PUSH Coalition, which has more voter registrars than the other groups but much less influence in the Daley regime. Jackson's group has only 3 percent of its registrars on the city payroll.
The Chicago way.
