More people are realizing that demographics is the biggest challenge the West faces. It will make pensions and healthcare systems obsolete and trigger an unprecedented real estate crisis. Both the right and the left offer the wrong solutions though. 1. The right talks about better pro-family benefits. The issue is that it is already too late. The median age of women in Europe is 46, regardless of benefits, they won’t get pregnant anymore. Demands for a complete immigration stop or remigration are counterproductive and would only accelerate the implosion of Western economies and societies. 2. The left’s mass immigration approach makes a bad situation worse. Importing unskilled men and putting them on welfare doesn’t stabilize state finances or help the birth rate, regardless what the left believe, men don’t get pregnant that often. Those who work compete with young Europeans for entry-level jobs, making it harder for young people to get jobs and start families. Mass immigration also makes affordable housing scarce, so young people don’t have children. The right solution is rebalancing child benefits to improve daycare, allowing young women to have children and work. Eliminate unnecessary regulations throttling residential property construction, and instead of mass male immigration, attract young women and well-educated families with young children. Common sense must replace ideology if we want to avoid a disaster.
